The Place of Sacrifice

17 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ² “Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the people of Israel and say to them, This is the thing that the Lord has commanded. ³ If any one of the house of Israel ^(A)kills an ox or a lamb or a goat in the camp, or kills it outside the camp, ⁴ and ^(B)does not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer it as a gift to the Lord in front of the tabernacle of the Lord, bloodguilt shall be imputed to that man. He has shed blood, and that man ^(C)shall be cut off from among his people. ⁵ This is to the end that the people of Israel may bring their sacrifices that they sacrifice ^(D)in the open field, that they may bring them to the Lord, to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and sacrifice them ^(E)as sacrifices of peace offerings to the Lord. ⁶ And the priest shall ^(F)throw the blood on the altar of the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting and burn the fat ^(G)for a pleasing aroma to the Lord. ⁷ So they shall no more sacrifice their sacrifices to goat demons, after whom they ^(H)whore. This shall be a statute forever for them throughout their generations.

⁸ “And you shall say to them, Any one of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn among them, who ^(I)offers a burnt offering or sacrifice ⁹ and ^(J)does not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer it to the Lord, ^(K)that man shall be cut off from his people.

Laws Against Eating Blood

¹⁰ “If any one of the house of Israel or of the strangers who sojourn among them ^(L)eats any blood, I will ^(M)set my face against that person who eats blood and will cut him off from among his people. ^11 (N)For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar ^(O)to make atonement for your souls, ^(P)for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life. ¹² Therefore I have said to the people of Israel, No person among you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger who sojourns among you eat blood.

¹³ “Any one also of the people of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn among them, who takes in hunting any beast or bird that may be eaten shall ^(Q)pour out its blood and ^(R)cover it with earth. ¹⁴ For the life of every creature^[a] is its ^(S)blood: its blood is its life.^[b] Therefore I have said to the people of Israel, You shall not eat the blood of any creature, for the life of every creature is its blood. Whoever eats it shall be cut off. ^15 (T)And every person who eats what dies of itself or what is torn by beasts, ^(U)whether he is a native or a sojourner, ^(V)shall wash his clothes and ^(W)bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening; then he shall be clean. ¹⁶ But if he does not wash them or bathe his flesh, ^(X)he shall bear his iniquity.”

Christ's Sacrifice Once for All

10 For since the law has but ^(A)a shadow ^(B)of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, ^(C)it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. ² Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? ³ But ^(D)in these sacrifices ^(E)there is a reminder of sins every year. ⁴ For ^(F)it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

⁵ Consequently, ^(G)when Christ^[a] came into the world, he said,

⁵ And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and ^(A)consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and ^(B)offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and ^(C)cursed^[a] God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.

¹³ Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain ^(A)that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and ^(B)they will be afflicted for ^(C)four hundred years. ¹⁴ But ^(D)I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward ^(E)they shall come out with great possessions.

²⁰ When you come together, it is not the Lord's supper that you eat. ²¹ For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, ^(A)another gets drunk. ²² What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise ^(B)the church of God and ^(C)humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not.

²³ For ^(D)I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that ^(E)the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, ²⁴ and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for^[a] you. Do this in remembrance of me.”^{[b] 25} In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” ²⁶ For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death ^(F)until he comes.

^27 (G)Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord ^(H)in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning ^(I)the body and blood of the Lord. ^28 (J)Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. ²⁹ For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. ³⁰ That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some ^(K)have died.^{[c] 31 (L)}But if we judged^[d] ourselves truly, we would not be judged. ³² But when we are judged by the Lord, ^(M)we are disciplined^[e] so that we may not be ^(N)condemned along with the world.
